Comparison between hollywood film and foreign cinema.

The focus films for this are: NOTE: they were both made in 1959.

A hollywood film: North by Northwest.
  • Studio based background.
  • Colourful.
  • A lot of the characters are formally dressed.
  • Expensive - high budget.
  • Slick.
  • Glossy.
  • Entertainment.
  • Simple narrative.
  • Continuity editing.
  • Cause and effect narrative.

A French film: A bout de souffle (breathless).
  • Fast paced.
  • Narrative is hard to follow.
  • Main protagonist had a boring tone.
  • Black and white.
  • Dialogue reliant.
  • Gritty.
  • Documentary influence.
  • Realistic.
  • Spontaneous.
  • Immeadiate.
  • Not glossy.
  • Shot on location - Paris.
  • Hand held cameras.
  • Sometimes poor lighting.
Foriegn films - visual style is in opposition to Hollywood - not glossy, has a low budget.
